Chinese New Year- Mom arrives
Chinese New Year is upon on us. Matt is away skiing for his Bachelor party and Mom is visiting me in Hong Kong. I have been slacking on the blog so I'm getting things back on track. My new years resolution if you will. Today's blog visit is about Mom's first day in HK. More to follow...
A little history
Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese calendar. The origin is centuries old. Per the History Channel: Legend spoke of the wild beast Nien (which also is the word for "year") that appeared at the end of each year, attacking and killing villagers. Loud noises and bright lights were used to scare the beast away, and the Chinese New Year celebrations were born. Today, the 15-day New Year festivities are celebrated with a week of vacation in metropolitan areas of China. Much like the Western New Year (January 1st), the biggest celebration is on the eve of the holiday. At the turn of the new year, firework displays are put on throughout the city.
Our apartment lobby is maxed out with the traditional decor
Flowers for the new year (still determining the meanings and origins of the different varieties displayed around town)
2012 Year of the Dragon
Nearby construction of a 40+ story building all constructed with bamboo
Walking around the hood
More construction
Traditional decorations are every where. Windows and doors are decorated with red color paper-cuts, paper dragons and phrases with popular themes of "good fortune" or "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity".
More market treasures
Taking Mom to get her fake lashes
On the bus to Stanley Market
Hong Kong Jockey Club
Eating lunch on the water
Buying PJ's for the kiddies
Loved this little doggie
Love this vendor. I had already purchased a horse from him on a previous visit and today I purchased a warrior. Mom got a couple of things from him too, but thankfully his merchandise is a bargain.
I am buying a big Buddha one of these days
I wore my pedometer today= 23,019 steps.
More Hong Kong adventures tomorrow...
